Countdown to the Event !
Program Components
The MLA has been carefully planned to provide attendees with a full spectrum of training to address both personal and professional leadership as well as leadership within their organizations. From September 28th-30th, students from MAES Chapters across the United States will come together at San Jose State University. The components of the program each tie into specific objectives of the MLA and collectively fulfill the mission and vision of this conference and of MAES.
● Daily Briefings and Mentoring Touchpoints – A series of meetings are held between teams of students and professional mentors to address concerns any student team may have about their team competition projects, team dynamics, and any other topics they may have.
● Kickoff Challenge – This entertaining and challenging hands-on activity will break the ice between attendees and serve to build instant relationships and the feeling of familia that lasts through this conference and well into the future.
● DiSC Assessment & Building a Championship Team – The tool classifies people’s behavior into four types (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness) by looking at their preferences on two scales: Task versus People.
● Improvisation, Public Speaking, and Presentations Module – By the end of this module, students should understand how to think quickly and strategically for unexpected scenarios, methods for becoming better public speakers, and strategies for developing stronger presentations.
● Team Projects Competition – Teams of students work together to develop a proposal and presentation. Professionals are available to assist and help the students develop the project. The teams are assembled by the committee to give participants the opportunity to meet new people and network. This competition is designed to test creativity, professionalism, communication, and teamwork as students convince a panel of judges to select their program.
● Self-Assessment/Myers-Briggs – The Myers-Briggs personality test is an assessment that aims to give you insight into how you perceive the world and make decisions. Students can use this information to understand the fundamental ways in which they move about this world.
● Linear Thinking in a Nonlinear World – If you have ever sat down to complete a task from beginning to end, one step after another, you’ve engaged in linear thinking. On the other hand, if your mind resists thinking one step at a time, your thoughts jumping ahead or leaping back to make a connection, you’re probably a non-linear thinker.
● Well-Being Module – This pillar will introduce the fundamental concepts of well-being. Participants will learn about the multiple dimensions of well-being and complete a self-assessment to determine what they should consider focusing on in developing their own well-being.
● StrengthsFinder® – The StrengthsFinder® session is a self-assessment activity where attendees will identify their top strengths based on Clifton StrengthsFinder®. Personalized evaluations will be made for each attendee as well as group analysis for each team. The MLA will conclude with a debriefing and open discussion to reflect on the lessons learned by applying StrengthsFinder® throughout the events of the conference.
● Emotional Intelligence – Emotional intelligence (or emotional quotient or EQ) is the ability to understand, use, and manage your emotions positively to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges, and defuse conflict.
● Time Management/Prioritization – Time management is the process of organizing and planning how to divide your time between different activities. Get it right, and you’ll work smarter, not harder, to get more done in less time – even when time is tight and pressures are high.
● Conflict Resolution/Negotiation – Conflict negotiation is the process of permanently resolving a dispute or conflict by providing for each side’s needs and adequately addressing their interests to create a mutually satisfying outcome.
● Elevator Speech, Personal Development, and Chapter Advocacy Tools – Students will receive time to compose and practice their elevator pitch, gain tools to foster personal development, and compile mechanisms for chapter advocacy.
