Being a part of the MAES familia is a meaningful, professional and dynamic experience. Throughout the years, MAES has achieved many milestones that increase the effectiveness of the organization to support students and professionals. There can be no better place to celebrate the MAES familia than in Las Vegas. For three out of the last five years, MAES has held it’s annual symposium in Sin City. The energy found on the Las Vegas strip serves as the spark needed to set off an explosion of inspiration and motivation during the annual familia reunion. While each year the symposium attendance is up, there are many that don’t understand the “Jackpot of Opportunities” that the symposium can offer them.

Here is a MAES student’s perspective on the top things that people missed by staying at home.

Lockheed Martin reviewing your resume.

Networking with other schools and professionals.

Career Fare with a professional to student ratio of 9 to 1.

Developmental workshops conducted by top influential organizations

Lean Six Sigma Training sponsored by the United States Navy.

Keynote speeches by distinguished industry professionals.

Valuable face time with employers and industry representatives.

Over 500 students capitalized on “Jackpot of Opportunities.” All of which walked away as winners. At next years symposium, will you be a winner?

To be a good engineering student takes a lot of steps to achieve it and succeed. Probably one of the most complicated careers there are in the world of education is engineering, but certainly it is not impossible. People should always have in their minds, “If they did it, I can do it too,” because sometimes you will find asking yourself why did I chose Engineering, but if you like it, it is worth the “pain” that it brings. The Navy Lieutenant Caleb Wines studied Nuclear Engineering and certainly it was not an easy path, but it was not an impossible task either. There are some points that we will need to have in consideration, and we will present you 7 points needed to succeed in your engineering career.

Always attend your classes.

You might have a class were you really struggle or really don’t want to go, but that will never help you.

Form study groups Not only will it enhance your ability to work and sole problems in groups, it will also help your communication skills

Join clubs and organizations.

Joining them will always benefit you, they will help you know better your peeps and your professors.

Study!

Even though you think you understood the lecture from your professor, there is no harm if you give it a little review, that will help you clarify your thoughts.

Always plan ahead.

Planning ahead of the game will keep you up to date with your homework and your work, projects, etc…

Network!

Networking will benefit you by growing relationships that can open doors toward your career

Lt Caleb Paul Wines said “don’t be afraid to fail. Learn from the mistakes that you make, and you will come out stronger.” The path to becoming an engineer will be filled with challenges and bumps those challenges will be the ones that form the Engineer of the 21st century.

Leaders of tomorrow STEM from the seeds our leaders plant today. Reaching out to the younger generation can inspire them to learn about STEM fields. As the founding MAES chapter at Cal State Fullerton, we have worked on reaching out to the local community to continue the mission of MAES.

Our strategies for inspiring the future leaders were to target the local high school students to participate in the Science Extravaganza and mentor a MAES junior chapter.

Science Extravaganza is an all day event where we expose students to science and engineering fields as well as encouraging them to pursue higher education. We invite several motivational speakers in professional fields to inspire students to set goals and achieve their dreams. We also recruited on campus clubs to host hands on workshops for students to practically apply what is learned in the classroom. For example, a popular workshop was hosted by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), completed a circuit to demonstrate how a burglar alarm is triggered. Campus tours were provided to allow students to be familiar with a college campus and learn about the different resources that are offered and available to them. We hope to make students excited about college and the STEM fields.

FIRST Robotics (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a competition that pairs high school students with working professionals and college students to design, assemble and test a robot’s capabilities of performing a specified task. By providing guidance high school students are able to then have their robot compete against other high schools in a nation wide robotics competition.

We were honored to receive the Outreach Award and our MAES familia will continue to reach out to our community. Our goal is to impact the local youth and raise dedicated leaders that will carry on the MAES tradition. How are you helping spread knowledge of STEM fields to your local community?

The MAES Symposium is a great experience. If you haven’t been yet, here are some pieces of advice from your friends that went previously. Following these 10 simple recommendations will help you succeed at the Symposium and throughout your professional career. They may seem basic, but the basics build the foundation for success.

Don’t let this (see above) happen to you!

1. Do your homework before you leave

Unfortunately no, you cannot submit your homework via text message. Talk to your professors at least 2 weeks before you leave and work beforehand to submit your assignments.

2. Who, What, Where, When?

These are great questions to ask if you’re writing a news article, but they aren’t recommended interview questions. Keep in contact with the new people you meet, and write down names to remember them if you have to.

3. Big Checks are Sexy

Now you just need to figure out how to put them in your wallet. There are a lot of opportunities for scholarships so look at the different ones before you go including: Padrino/Madrina, Graduate, Founders, Presidential, and Navy.

4. Work on That Resume

If your recruiter crumples your resume and throws it into the incinerator, you probably need to spend some quality editing time. Remember to stop by the resume room on the first day (when they’re not as busy) to put the final touches on, and make sure your spelling is rite!

5. Be Flexible

Be sure you stretch between each workshop. No not that type of flexible! Know the schedule for every day and keep some time open. You’ll want to have time to follow up with some of your new contacts.

6. What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas

Unless it ends up on Facebook, tattooed on your arm, or you find something more beneficial like an internship or a job. Remember that the Symposium is a fantastic opportunity to jump-start your career.

7. Dress to Impress

Check the dew rags, muscle shirts, and gym shorts at the door. Although you don’t need a tuxedo, a suit goes a long way to helping you dress the part at the MAES Symposium.

8. Look Before you Leap

“Ummmmmmmmmmmm, so what do you do?” is not the best way to start a conversation. Research the companies you’re interested in online before you talk to their reps.

9. Pack Lightly to Fit Your GPA

Whether you know it or not you’re preparing for the Symposium all year. Set yourself up for a great experience by succeeding in the classroom first.

10. Manage your time

You’re going to be busy all day. We’d say more about this but got 2 go!….

Life is a balancing act, PV=nRT a thermal dynamic act.

So please read these, couple tips

Because life can be solved with a couple of tricks.

Pressure

A life without struggles may seem ideal to most individuals. Yet, the hardships we are confronted

with can end up as a blessing in disguised when we least expect them. How we handle our academic,

personal, work, and financial pressures helps us shape our character, a trait above all most desirable.

Volume

We, students, are held with the expectations to be the leaders of tomorrow for our community. Some

people break when they are bombarded with responsibility, while others shine among the rest when placed under the responsibility.

Moles

We are seven billion people in this world. What this means, seven billion individuals will all have similar dreams, talents, and ideas whom they wish to share to the world. In today’s competitive world, the only way to shine is to be true to yourself, focus, be driven, and appreciative of all opportunities that come your way.

Rate

Time is our biggest enemy, especially when we don’t know how to manage our time wisely. We can spend our entire lives dreaming about the future, instead of making your future into a reality. Work countlessly, be persistent, and use your time wisely.

Temperature

Balance is the key to success for anything you wish to achieve. Paying careful attention to detail and making sure you keep a balanced and healthy lifestyle can take you far in both life and your professional career.

Through the path that you go and the choices you’ll make You will make some mistakes that will make your heart ache But remember, please do that whatever you do look forward, keep working It’ll be worth it one day When sun shines down The birds will sing and the world will see the beat of your dream. It’s not the value of your shoes but which steps you take That will lead you wherever and let passion guide your way.

It’s up to you where you want to go, the sky is the limit so let your mind soar

Do you have to courage to go?

Can you find your way?

Can you handle the pressure of your own fame?

Show your members how much support you are able to offer them by providing an immediate return on their investment in MAES. Academic success can be easily achieved, especially with the support of a national organization that values education as much as its members do.

Increase your chapter’s GPA, membership, and sense of community within a year

Prospective members will be enticed by a FREE tutoring program. Tutoring will not only help your members learn better study skills, but it will help them to connect with one another on a more personal level. This unique program gives the students the opportunity to simultaneously learn their material and build friendships, allowing them to devote time to their studies without feeling deprived of their social lives. Working together to solve problems and being supportive of each other will strengthen the bonds of familia that MAES so proudly encourages.

How to Begin and Sustain a Thriving Tutoring Program:

1. Recruit motivated mentors

For your mentors, look no further than your current MAES familia. Individuals in upper division undergraduate classes and with other university experience are the ideal students to recruit for these mentoring positions. The courses that will have the most demand for tutoring aid are the introductory STEM classes, which upperclassmen can easily provide useful advice for. Of course they will be paid, not by monetary means, but by the experience they will gain. Keep in mind that mentors do not absolutely have to be MAES members, but might be encouraged to learn more about the organization as a result.

2. Develop a tutoring schedule at an appropriate time

Regular tutoring sessions should be held on a weekly basis, or bi-weekly depending on demand. Tutoring hours should be based around the mentor’s academic schedule; at a time when the most participation is possible. Sources like Doodle.com can help your chapter decide on the best time to help your members.

3. Reach out to the rest of your MAES familia

During the first general meetings of the year, your members should provide feedback on the subjects they need help with. General surveys should be developed to ensure a quality tutoring staff. Reach out to the rest of your familia!

4. Get feedback

Every tutoring program is different. Each chapter will develop their own methods and strategies to enhance their academic performance. Allow your members to provide feedback in order to improve your program each year.

Follow these simple steps and we can guarantee that you will have a successful tutoring program where your tutors are more than just teaching you but are also mentoring you along the way!

Recently The University of Texas at El Paso MAES/SHPE Chapter hosted the annual Science and Engineering Extravaganza in which elementary and middle school students learned about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). In addition, the event intends to expand their educational opportunities and assist students in becoming college eligible through a variety of developmental activities. The kids were welcomed by Iron Man and Captain America, as well as other characters from The Avengers, to different STEM-related workshops organized and presented by difference engineering organizations throughout the UTEP College of Engineering to spark their interest in science and engineering at an early stage in their lives.

This year’s event hosted more than 580 students that were surprised with the event theme “The Avengers”. All of the workshops were related to one of the movie’s character to make interesting and at the same time FUN! Since the beginning, kids were delighted with an exciting and energetic kick off. MAES members dressed up as Avengers, giving a unique touch to the event. Students throughout the day enthusiastically participated and asked questions to enrich their STEM interest and knowledge in different fields, but at the same time visualize their opportunities as engineers and scientists to change the world.

What are you doing to promote STEM in your community?

Prestigious engineering company, Lockheed Martin, also contributed to our efforts of making this day possible, hosting an Aviation and Propulsion Workshop. ”Our aim is to stimulate interest and increase enthusiasm among young students to pursue a degree in a field of engineering and science. For most of the participating students this is their first opportunity to spend time at the University and meet college students, faculty and STEM professionals,” said Michael Acosta, President of the MAES National Organization.

There are a variety of opportunities to promote, cultivate, and honor excellence in education and leadership among Latino engineers and scientists.

Are you ready to join the cause?

With the country on the verge of an economic crisis, an increasing number of college students find that they are unable to locate adequate employment. In this competitive market, recent grads are required to display a special skill set that sets them apart from their peers. So how do you get this special skill set?

Become Involved in School! There are three specific things that recruiters look for in the ideal candidate: communication skills, leadership, and teamwork. The best way to obtain or demonstrate these skills is by participating in extracurricular activities. These extracurricular activities allow students to develop professionally and academically. This is generally achieved through the various networking opportunities, workshops, and technical work that specific organizations participate in. In these various activities students are forced to speak, work together, and take charge. Students who cruise by their college career focusing only on maintaining a 4.0 GPA will be in for a surprise when their lack of involvement will make them undesirable towards recruiters.

Become a Leader! While becoming involved with student orgs will help build up leadership, nothing says, “I CAN DO THIS,” than person who has taken up the task. Recruiters want employees who are self motivated, confident, resourceful, and decisive. While leadership may come naturally to some, it can be definitely cultivated in others. At times the best way to cultivate leadership is to fake it. The famous phrase “Fake it till you make it,” applies in this respect. Cowards do not become courageous overnight, they must perform courageous acts to cultivate it, the same goes for leaders. By “faking” confidence, you will be put in situations that will grow it, and put you up to the challenge.

Follow Your Passion! While recruiters are looking to fill a position, they are also looking for an individual who will become excited about their work and will thereby contribute towards the organization or company as a whole. Nothing is more obvious to a recruiter than a student who is obviously not interested in the job. Conversely, students excited about the task at hand stand out more than the scent of pubescent teenagers after gym class. It is your passion that makes you special and determined to overcome any obstacle at hand. A passionate recruit is an ideal recruit.

By following these steps, even the shyest college student can put up a fight in their tedious journey to obtain employment. These steps will not only aid you in your development, but will moreover transform you into a confident and desirable recruit. Where are you in your transformation?
